Some Natural Immune Boosters!!!!

1.MUSHROOMS: Studies show that mushrooms aid in production of white blood cells, which are necessary to fight infections. Mushrooms contain beta-D-glucans, which is primarily responsible for its immune boosting activity.

2.GARLIC: Garlic contains allicin, ajoene and thiosulfinate, three powerful agents that help the body fight infection.

3.OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT: Olive leaf extract taken on long term, has shown to prevent viral and yeast infections.

4.ORANGE COLORED VEGETABLES: Orange vegetables like carrots, tomatoes, pumpkins help promote healthy skin, which is first line of defense against bacterial infections. Orange vegetables are great source of Beta-carotene, Vitamin A and Selenium which are powerful immune boosters.

5.GREEN TEA: The immune boosting ability of green tea comes from the alkylamines within it. Alkylamine increase the number of a particular type of infection-fighting blood cells called the gamma-delta T-cell.

6.ZINC: Zinc, found in oysters, lean red meat and poultry, nuts and beans, promotes cell synthesis which naturally boost our immunity. Even mild Zinc deficiency can adversely effect T-cell functions thus decreasing our immunity.

7.VITAMIN D: There is increasing evidence of the immune boosting benefits of Vitamin D also known as Sunshine Vitamin.

8.EXERCISE: Any form of exercise increases immune function. Regular physical activity increases the rate at which the white blood cells and antibodies travel through the body, boosting immunity naturally. Exercise also helps eliminate stress.

Ayurveda And Chronic Diseases -Part-IV

OBESITY:
Obesity is the heavy accumulation of fat in your body to such a degree that it rapidly increases your risk of diseases that can damage your health and knock years off your life, such as heart disease and diabetes.

The fat mostly gets accumulated in the areas such as stomach, hips, thighs, buttocks, giving one a shape of either a pear, or apple.

The total fat of the body is calculated by various measures such as BMI(Body Mass Index), Fatometer etc. These tests determine the amount of unwanted fat in the body.

Obesity is one of the rapidly rising disorders in this era, which gives rise to various other diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, arthritis etc.

One needs to get himself checked through the BMI, whether he falls in the overweight or obese category to prevent diseases associated with obesity.

Doctors use BMI because it compares your weight against your height.
Work out your BMI with the following formula:

Take your weight (kg) and divide it by the square of your height (m).
For example, if you weigh 80kg and are 1.7m:
1. Multiply your height by itself 1.7x1.7=2.89
2. Divide your weight by this figure.
3. 80 2.89= 27.7kg/m2.
27.7 is the BMI.

*You are in the normal range if your BMI is between 18.5 and 25 (kg/m2).
*You are overweight if your BMI is between 25 and 30.
*You are obese if your BMI is 30 or higher.
*You are morbidly obese if your BMI is 40 or higher.

AYURVEDA, believes that improper diet along with other factors such as sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, stress etc, blocks the minute channels all over the body. As a result, nourishment of the other vital components ceases and only fat goes on increasing, making the sufferer physically ungainly and weak.

An obese person is the one who, on account of inordinate increase in fat, is disfigured by pendulous belly and breasts, and whose increased bulk is not matched by a corresponding increase in energy.

Treatment of obesity is classified in to different categories which include external, internal treatment along with certain diet and deeds restrictions.

1) External treatment includes application of certain medicated powders and oil to burn the accumulated fat.
From time to time, mustard oil massage is helpful.

* Mixture of turmeric and pathani lodha powder applied before bath is beneficial.

* Dry massage by Haritaki, Shirish, Lodhra, Nagkeshar etc is found to be useful in reducing the fat as well as the bad body odour.

2) Internal treatment includes medications in th form of various formulationa, single drugs etc.

* Guggul is one of the common remedies used in treating the obesity. mostly combination of guggul are used.Triphala guggul, Medhohar guggul, Yograj guggul are the ones which are used.

* Arogyavardhini is the preparation which not only helps to reduce down the fat accumulation, but also maintains the overall health of the person.

* Drinking medicated water prepared by using certain herbs which are pungent and bitter in nature helps a lot.

3) The other type of treatment includes intake of healthy and low calorie diet and inculcating the habit of mild to moderate exercie in our day to day life.

NOTE: The above treatment should be undertaken only under medical supervision.

Ayurveda and chronic diseases part II

*Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition caused by increased levels of glucose(sugar) in the blood. this condition is caused in particular when our body does not produce enough of hormone insulin which helps in proper breakdown and utilisation of glucose. Insulin is produced by the pancreas (a gland behind the stomach) which helps to move glucose from blood into the cells of the body, where it is broken down to produce energy.
Diabetes is of two types: Type-1(Insulin dependent diabetes),Type-2(non insulin dependent diabetes)
Type-1 diabetes is caused when the body produces very little or no insulin thus leading to improper utilisation of glucose. In such cases the person has to depend on either insulin injections or antidiabetic medication for life long.
Type-2 diabetes is the condition wherein the amount of insulin produced is very minimal and or is not used properly by the body.
According to Ayurveda, Diabetes is known as 'Prameha' or 'Madhumeha'.
There are 20 types of Pramehas explained in ayurveda. Among these, 'Ikshumeha'(alimentary glucosuria) and 'Kshudrameha' are correlated with conditions in which sugar is found in urine.
Three ways have been prescribed for the management of diabetes in ayurveda. They are diet, deeds and drugs.

5 Top Yogasanas for a Flat Tummy!!!!

1. 30-Degree-Lift
Steps: Lie on your back. Now raise your upper body and legs slightly above the ground. Remember to raise the torso or back and not just raise and bend the neck. That would strain wrongly. The feet can go up till a level of 30 degrees above the ground. Hands are to be stretched out in front of you. Stay in the pose for 20 seconds, then come back and relax. Repeat once more.

2. Touch-your-Knee
Steps: Lie on your back. Lift your one knee and bend it towards your chest with the help of your hands. Try and make your nose touch your knee. The second leg remains on the ground. Once we become comfortable, also try raising the second leg in the air till about a 30 degrees level. Remain in the pose for around 20 seconds. Then slowly get back and relax. Alternate this with the other leg too. Repeat the round twice.

3. Acute-angle
Steps: Lie on the floor with your head facing down and hands bent by the elbow, kept by the chest sides. Now lift your torso up to make your hands be straight and perpendicular to the ground, back and legs straight and the palms right below the shoulders. Now raise your legs to rest only on feet fingers. The neck is to be straight in line with the back. Stay for at least 30-60 counts, come down slowly and relax. Repeat once more.

4. Cobra-Style
Steps: Lie down with the forehead on the ground. Keep the legs together and the arms at the sides with the palms by the side of the thighs. Now bring the arms closer to shoulder and then bend the arms at the elbows to bring the palms right below the shoulder. Tilt the head upwards to look up. Then slowly arch the spine and pressing the palms raise the upper trunk from the ground. Stay for 20 seconds. Then slowly resume to normal position. Repeat once more.

5. Leg-Lifts
Steps: This is more like those floor exercises. Lie on your back with your hands either stretched over the head or by the side of your body. Now raise your legs together up till a 45 degree angle and then slowly bring it back to the ground. Don’t bend the knees. The catch here is not to make your feet touch the ground but rather to keep it slightly up in the air. Then take it up again till 45 degrees. Slowly repeat this motion of up and down atleast 10-15 times. Relax then. Repeat if required.

Ayurveda and chronic diseases Part I

Ayurveda has been found very effective in treating chronic diseases.Below mentioned are few chronic diseases and their treatment by Ayurveda.

ALLERGY:Allergy is a disorder of the immune system. Allergic reactions occur to environmental substances known as allergens. It is characterized by excessive activation of certain cells resulting in an extreme inflammatory response. Common allergic reactions include eczema, hives, hay fever, asthma, food allergies, and reactions to the venom of stinging insects such as wasps and bees.
Mild allergies like hay fever, is quite common these days and cause symptoms such as allergic conjunctivitis and runny nose. Similarly, conditions such as asthma are common, in which allergy plays a major role. some people develop allergy to certain food articles, environmental allergens or medications resulting in anaphylactic reactions which can be life threatening and eventually leading to death.
According to Ayurveda, the cause of this disease can be explained by the following concept:
Any imbalance in the equilibrium of the five basic elements of the body which includes Prithvi(earth),Jal(water), Agni(fire), Vayu(air) and Akash(space), leads to the disease.

Certain ayurvedic formulations which help in such conditions include Arogyavardhini, Laxmivilas,Manjisthadi kwath or powder, Chawanprash, Gandhak rasayan.
herbs such as Guduchi, Haritaki, Bhibhitaki, Amlaki which makes the trio 'Triphala', Turmeric can also be used as single drug therapy or in combination.
For allergic rhinitis 'anu taila' can be used as nasal drops along with oral medication.

*ASTHMA:Asthma is a chronic condition involving the respiratory system in which the airway constricts, undergoes inflammation and gets filled with infected mucus.the condition gets triggered by certain things which include environmental allergens(cold air, moist air, certain strong smell), stress or exertion, and,or emotional factors. the disease is characterised by symptoms such as breathlessness, wheezing, coughing, perspiration and attacks of the similar symptoms in severe state. after immediate treatment the person feels well, but may remain with milder degree of the above mentioned symptoms for a long time.

Severe attacks of asthma can be life threatening if immediate medical attention is not given. As the diseases progresses, it also shows the following symptoms: anorexia, excessive weakness, oedema of hands and feet, excessive sweating and tachycardia. The patients immune power and functionong of the heart are also weakened.

Some medicinal herbs, useful in the treatment of asthma are: Adulsa(adhatoda vasica), Tulsi(holy basil), Yastimadhu(glycyrrhiza glabra), Arjuna(terminalia arjuna), kantakari(solanum xanthocarpum) and Bhibhitaki(terminalia beterica). These should be mixed together in equal quantity and half a teaspoonshould be taken twice a day either with honey or warm water.

Ayurvedic formulations such as Shwaskuthar ras, Chyawanprash, Sitopaladi churna, Kantakasav, Dashmoolarista have proven to be effective in treating asthma.
Also hot fermentation, with til oil and rock salt massage, on chest relieves breathlessness and relaxes the patient.

*TUBERCULOSIS:Tuberculosis is a disease caused by an infection with the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
It is a disease of the lungs. However, the infection can spread via blood from the lungs to all organs in the body. hence you can develop tuberculosis in the pleura (the covering of the lungs), in the bones, the urinary tract and sexual organs, the intestines, skin and even lumph nodes in the lung root and on the throat can get infected.
In Ayurveda, this disease is called 'rajyakshma' because in past, mainly kings and rich persons used to be affected by this disease due to their excessive indulgence in wine and women. This led to the vitiation of the vital components of the body, especially the shukra dhatu(semen), and made the affected person weaker day by day. so it was called as rajyakshma or kshaya rog.
Commonly used ayurvedic medicines are:Sitopaladi churna with honey is beneficial for cough expectoration. Ashtangawaleha and chyawanprash is also beneficial.
For blood in mucus, bol parpati with pomegrante juice and drakshasava twice daily after meals can be given.
For overall debility, powder of Shatavari, Ashwagandha, and White musali with milk is useful.

certain formulations include Arogyavardhini, Shwaskuthar ras,Lagumalini vasant, Laxmivilas, and Suvarna kalpas are helpful.

CAUTION: The medicines should be taken under strict medical supervision.

Causes of excessive thirst!!!!

Diabetes mellitus types 1 and 2 are often accompanied by increased thirst and a frequent need to urinate. In both conditions, the amount of sugar in the blood rises to a point where the kidneys are not able to prevent "spillage" of sugar out of the body via the urine. As sugar exits your body, it takes water with it; the net result of a chronically elevated blood sugar level is dehydration and ensuing thirst.Diabetes insipidus is also typically accompanied by excessive thirst and frequent urination. But the cause isn't related to having a high blood sugar level. Diabetes insipidus is an autoimmune illness that results in a deficiency of or resistance to antidiuretic hormone (ADH). The net effect of diabetes insipidus is loss of excessive water via your urine, which leads to low blood volume and chronic thirst.

Other Causes of Thirst:
Any factor that results in a significant decrease in blood volume can cause thirst; examples include diarrhea, vomiting, severe infections, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, and severe liver dysfunction.

Steps to prevent excessive dehydration:
Besides drinking adequate amount of water, minimize intake of salty foods, eat water-rich foods and drink healthy liquids whenever your thirst calls for them. Water-rich foods include all fruits, vegetables, and most other plant foods like legumes and whole grains that have been properly soaked and cooked.Healthy liquids include water, freshly pressed juices that aren't too sugary, and smoothies made with whole fruits and vegetables

Health benefits of magnetised water!!!!

What is magnetised Water? Water influenced by a strong magnet, undergoes certain physical and chemical changes. Its physical properties like centre of crystallisation,pH value and nitrogen dissolving capacity are suitably altered. Such magnetised water when consumed, improves health. It improves digestion, reduces acidity, acts like a diuretic, dissolves kidney stones.Magnetised water also relieves women of their menstrual problems. It also prevents the deposition of cholesterol on the inner surface of blood vessel, when consumed regularly. It strenghtens and invigorates the natural resistance power of the body.Hence it is useful for treatment of viral diseases, common cold, etc.
How to magnetise water?Strong magnets are required to magnetise water.Such strong magnets should be kept in contact with glass or a plastic bottle containing water. The contact should be maintained for about 24 hours. For preparing magnetised water, two magnets should be placed on either side of the bottle containing water such that north pole of one faces the south pole of other.Water magnetised by only one pole may have to be used in specific problems. For example in hyperacidity or gastric ulcer, water magnetised by south pole alone must be used.On other hand, for sluggish digestion, water magnetised by north pole should be used.
DOSAGE:Magnetised water should be taken 3-5 times a day, in dosage of about 100 ml(half a glass).

Healthy life with healthy liver!!!

Do you want to live a long and healthy life? If you do then it is vital that you start to take care of your body in ways you may not have thought of before.

We are constantly exposed to chemicals and toxins in our environment, from the food we eat and the products we use. Combined with environmental pollution, fast foods, drugs, alcohol, and a sedentary lifestyle, it’s no wonder our livers end up sluggish and diseased with the inevitable result for our bodies. Sluggish liver in particular slows down your metabolism. For many, this leads to weight gain, especially for those living in harsher winter climates where physical activity is significantly reduced.

One of the best ways to kick-start your metabolism and give your health a boost is to give your body a little spring cleaning of its own and detoxify your system!

The most important step to begin detoxing your body is cutting out most refined and processed foods which contain trans-fats, sugar and additives such as artificial colors and monosodium glutamate (MSG).

Eat more raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and vegetable protein like beans, lentils and quinoa. By choosing organic foods, you can reduce your exposure to pesticides. Some readily available all natural detox-friendly foods include kale, beets, and spinach, which can be prepared in delicious salads. Also, never underestimate the power of physical exercise! Since the skin is the largest elimination organ your body has, working up a sweat is yet another great way to promote cleansing and body detoxification! And don’t forget to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Stress and Diabetes!!!!

Everyone experiences stress in their lives - economy related, emotional,
physical and occupational. This stress not only triggers a spike in our sugar level, but also can result in more serious illness.

So how does stress cause an increase in blood sugar?

Stress results in overproduction of Cortisol, a hormone that
counteracts the effect of insulin and results in elevated blood sugar.

If you cannot deal with stress, you will even have a harder time trying
to keep your blood sugar levels balanced.

People with diabetes may be additionally stressed from trying to cope
with the disease. Daily stress can interfere with the management
of diabetes and make it difficult to control our blood sugar.

Practising Yoga and Pranayama daily goes a long way in helping a person to de-stress and thus regulate blood sugar.
